A. it is best to join organizations that you are interested in. colleges like to see that you actually care about the things you are involved in. so if you like playing a sport, join a team. if you enjoy volunteering, join a volunteer organization. it is best to show commitment and passion toward an activity, rather than worry what looks best. it's also good if you take a leadership role in an organization that you're involved in because that shows more dedication and responsibility.

How community based organizations can be integrated into an umbrella organization?
Q. How community based organization can be integrated into an umbrella organization? We are living in small town and intend to form a coalition of different CBOs.Our town has sanitation problem,we want to combine the efforts of different organizations and solve the problem collectively. Is there any article, book or web site available for this particular purpose?
Asked by smilee - Wed May 21 00:43:51 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It is a tough thing to do. Some members of our community tried that and it did not work. The different org. did not want to come under the umbrella because of differences in each group's Mission Statement. The umbrella group was attempting to coordinate the donations of time and money to ensure better results. It cause such a rift in the Community that the general consensus was to have each organization send two representatives for discussions on Community problems.

Q. Meaning an organization that helps someone start a company not only financially but also gives them advice through market research and or other methods. Also organizations that help companies until they get on their feet. I'm looking for an organization that you can take an idea to and they help you make it happen (turn it into a reality).

A. Go to and in the upper left hand corner, enter your zip code. On the next screen, you will get information on the nearest SCORE chapter. Call them and arrange for a free meeting with a SCORE counselor. SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide. SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). SCORE has 389 chapters in locations throughout the United States and its territories, with 10,500 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business counselors.

other organizations such as the Peace Corps or AmeriCorps?
Q. I am interested in a year of service after graduating before going on to law school, and I was trying to find an organization that was more hands-on than the two mentioned above. These organizations are more about setting up a poverty network than physically helping people in poverty, from what I have read anyway, and I am interested in something more direct. Any suggestions, tips, advice? Thanks in advance.

How are volunteer organizations primarily funded?
Q. I am thinking mainly of ESL literacy organizations. I realize they have the volunteers for the work, but they also ussually have full time staff, facilities and revenue. Do donations keep these organizations afloat, or do they tap into some sort of government grant handout that supports them because they are serving the community (whatever that means) I would like to know how these organizations work? I'm believer in the follow the money principle but where is the money come from?

A. There are certain fights that are mandatory for a champion to take because of mandatory challengers in which a fighter has won title eliminators to earn a shot at the title. Not ALL championship fights are mandatories though- sometimes a fighter will opt to make an optional defense when he does not have to make a mandatory defense. A champion can defend against any fighter who is ranked in the top 25 of that particular sanctioning body but the sanctioning bodies can sometimes make exceptions for unification bouts. A. How about you help someone on kiva.org? These people are trying to improve their situation for themselves and their families in the 3rd World by starting small local projects and businesses. You can help them directly by lending them money, interest free. The risk is actually very low as about 95% of the money is paid back. When you get it back, you help someone else! EDIT: Thanks for clearing that up, RoofingPrincess! Turns out Kiva doesn't charge interest, but Kiva actually deals with microfinance partners on the field and these partners do charge various rates.
